The news of Adrian Newey leaving Red Bull spiced up the transfer market as the 65-year-old is the most revered designer in the history of the sport. Subsequently, rumors regarding his transfer to Ferrari flooded the paddock. However, there is a new candidate in the rumor mill in the form of Mercedes, who is now reported to be in the run to get Newey’s signature.

The fallout between Adrian Newey and Red Bull was a shocking one. The Brit’s designs had helped the Austrian Marque to claim a dozen world championships in the span of just two decades. However, with the recent frenzy going on over at Milton Keynes, the Englishman decided to walk away from the team that he had been leading and gave a chance to pass on the baton to another team for one last time.

Subsequently, according to Auto Motor und Sport, Mercedes has approached the Brit to gain access to his services after his gardening leave with Red Bull is over. This report has emerged after strong rumors that Ferrari would be poaching the design wizard, subsequently throwing the paddock into a rumble.

Martin Brundle claims hiring Adrian Newey is a double-edged sword

With Newey’s vast experience, everyone would interpret acquiring his services as claiming a key for the world championship. However, multiple F1 figures have stated that the Brit is overrated and acquiring him might not be enough to win a world championship.

Subsequently, Martin Brundle claimed that hiring the design genius could be compared to a double-edged sword. The 64-year-old asserted that hiring Newey would require a lot of money and he also needs a different working atmosphere like that he received in Red Bull. So, hiring him would not be sufficient in warranting the team a championship and he also comes with various caveats attached alongside.

You’ve got to have a lot of money and a lot of resource or there’s no point having Adrian Newey. If you sit him in an office, but you don’t have the goods around him and the funds to use his ideas, then there’s no point. But clearly Mercedes, Aston Martin, McLaren, Ferrari will be looking and trying to get [Newey] somehow. Because it’s a double-edged sword. If you can get Adrian’s experience and skills, then you’ve got him and somebody else doesn’t have him. So they’ll all be trying like crazy. If they’re not, they should be. Martin Brundle said in the Beyond The Grid podcast.

However, not hiring the 65-year-old is like a double-edged sword because if one team does not hire him, it could be a loss for them as any other team could acquire his mastery over the F1 knowledge. This could spell disaster for another, thus making the Brit one of the hottest properties in the F1 market.
